Good Afternoon,

This letter is being sent to a large group of colleagues and individuals who we hope will join us in a Day of Action.

As you may know, the Grassy Mountain Coal Joint Review Panel hearings are scheduled to begin on October 27th, and many people across Alberta feel the urgency to oppose this venture. AWA, in partnership with Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment (CAPE) and Extinction Rebellion Alberta (XR), are planning a Day of Action - an act of solidarity for all concerned citizens opposed coal mining exploration and development in Alberta’s Eastern Slopes. This is a formal invitation to join the cause.

The Day of Action will be comprised of two parts:

 1) An In-Person Rally, and

2) A Telephone Blitz by people all over the province to federal and provincial officials.

The In-Person Rally will be held at McDougall Centre at 11:30am on October 27th. The goal is to have a minimum 100 supporters in person with placards, signs and noisemakers, drawing the attention of media and the public. We need firm commitments from supporters to show up in person. While this will be a peaceful and positive rally, the intent is to make a ruckus that cannot be ignored. The In-Person Rally will be lawful and will strictly adhere to COVID-19 distancing protocols. Alberta’s Health Service standards at this time state that this assembly cannot exceed 200 individuals and everyone must maintain a safe distance, while wearing a mask.

The second part of this Day of Action is the Phone Call Blitz; supporters will phone their respective elected officials and the Minister Jonathan Wilkinson to voice their concerns about coal mining operations proceeding in Alberta. Similar to the In-Person Rally, we are looking for firm commitments on behalf of supporters to make these calls on the Day of Action. Letters and emails from supporters will also be encouraged.

If you are interested in joining the Day of Action, please let me know as soon as possible. Our goal is to give concerned community members an opportunity to act, and recruiting as many people as possible will be key in making the Day of Action a success. Looking into the future, this action group will likely continue to coordinate events and efforts to maintain continuous pressure on the provincial and federal government, in an effort to stop the progression of coal mining in Alberta. It will be helpful if each interested organization identifies one coordinator we can communicate with directly, while being responsible for keeping all those within your respective group or organization up to date as things progress.

I sincerely hope you will join us,

Nissa

P.S If there is anyone you think would be interested in the Day of Action, please feel free to forward this letter to them.
